Double gold for Russia at Acro Worlds as Men's Pair wins in a stunner02/04/2016
PUTIAN (CHN) -- For a nation with such great expectations in Acrobatic Gymnastics, Russia is still capable of shocking: Russian gymnasts grabbed both golds in the first finals at the World Championships Saturday, their victory in Men's Pairs the surprise of the championships so far.
If the World title in Women's Pairs was a natural progression for Daria Guryeva and Daria Kalinina after years of domination on the European level, Igor Mishev and Nikolay Suprunov pulled off a big upset with gold in Men's. The Russian duo, who trailed Belgians Arne van Gelder and Vincent Casse throughout the qualifying rounds, brought in the top score in the one-and-done final, relegating Belgium to silver medal status by a mere 0.18.
Suprunov and Mishev, shut out of the World final two years ago by eventual champions Konstantin Pilipchuk and Alexei Dudchenko, give Russia its third straight World title in Men's Pairs. For their part, the elegant Guryeva and Kalinina bring the Women's title back to their homeland for the first time since 2008.
The Men's Pair podium: 2016 World champions Nikolay Suprunov and Igor Mishev, with silver medallists Vincent Casse and Arne van Gelder (BEL) and bronze medallists Kim Un Hak and Ri Chol Jun (PRK).
The Women's Pair podium: 2016 World champions Daria Kalinina and Daria Guryeva (RUS), flanked by silver medallists Marharyta Bartashevich and Viktoriya Mikhnovich (BLR) and bronze medallists Natascha Van Es and Laurie Philpott (BEL).
Russia, China hold steady in Mixed Pairs, Groups
A slight mistake by Marina Chernova and Georgy Pataraya in their difficulty-packed second exercise didn't upset the status quo in Mixed Pairs: With one performance left to do in the qualifying round, the Russian pair celebrated for their difficulty remains more than a point ahead of American upstarts Axel Osborne and Tiffani Williams.
A precise second routine extended Russia's (Yulia Nikitina, Valeriia Belkina and Zhanna Parkhomets) lead in Women's Group competition, even as challenger Belarus (Katsiaryna Barysevich, Veranika Nabokina and Karina Sandovich) continued to impress.
In Men's Group competition, the Chinese (Li Zheng, Rui Liuming, Zhang Teng and Zhou Jiahuai) delivered another commanding performance to widen their lead over Great Britain (Adam Upcott, Charlie Tate, Lewis Watts and Conor Sawenko) to more than two points.

First federations qualify to The World Games 2017
By dint of their classification at the end of the qualifying rounds, Belgium, Russia, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and China all earned the right to send both Men's and Women's Pairs to The World Games next year in Wroclaw, Poland, an Olympic Games-style event for non-Olympic sports. Belarus and the USA have qualified to send Women's Pairs, while Israel and Germany also qualified Men's Pairs.
