British Acrobatic gymnasts qualified in first place to three of the five senior finals at the Limes Acro World Cup Thursday in Aalen (GER).
Reigning World Games champions Alice Upcott and Dominic Smith edged anglophone rivals Kiley Boynton and Ryan Ward to top the qualification in the Mixed Pairs category (28.855-28.225). The Men's Four of Gareth Wood, George Wood, Connor Bartlett and Daniel Cook stood tallest among the Men's Groups (29.595) over Fours from Bulgaria and Belarus, while the women's Trio of Georgia Lancaster, Elise Matthews and Millie Spalding hit their routine for 28.855, good enough for first in the Women's Group. Britain's second Women's Trio (Jennifer Bailey, Cicely Irwin and Josephine Russell) notched 27.975 for third.
Part of Britain's recent success in the sport likely derives from the Acro troupe Spelbound, which shot to fame after winning the popular TV show "Britain's Got Talent" in 2010. Spelbound contains a number of British national team gymnasts, including Trio members Lancaster, Matthews and Spalding.
Russia, a traditional world power in Acro with a long history of excellence, had a respectable start to the competition. Men's Pair Sergey Kuzmin and Ivan Nasonov, the third of three Russian Men's Pairs competing in Aalen, surprised with the top score in qualification (28.225) in front of 2012 World team members Maxim and Dmitry Ivanov, who qualified third (27.675). Additionally, Mixed Pair Angelina Devyatova and Dzhamal Aliev finished third (27.955), while Trio Nataliya Lavrukhina, Natalia Solodninia and Viktoria Sukhareva qualified second (28.225), sandwiched between two British Trios.
Belarusians Marharyta Bartashevich and Victoria Mikhnovich qualified first for the Women's Pair final, ahead of 2012 Russian Worlds competitors Eliaveta Dubrovina and Valentina Kim (28.805) and challengers Dina Vikhrianova and Victoria Korniychuk (RUS, 27.875).
