World Age Group Competitions serve as a kind of Junior World Championships for younger competitors, and is often an indicator of potential at the senior level. As in the senior World division, gymnasts compete in Women's Pair, Men's Pair, Mixed Pair, Women's Trio and Men's Group in three different age group categories (11-16, 12-18 and 13-19 years old).
Russia, a traditional Acro power whose gymnasts often go on to work as professional acrobats in shows like Cirque du Soleil, proved that it's school of gymnastics still produces best-in-the-world material, captured nine golds, two silvers and two bronze. Russia was the dominant country among 13-19-year-olds, winning four of the five titles available: Valeriya Victorova and Daria Guryeva in Women's Pair (28.250 points); Alexey Iakovlev and Danill Kuzmin in Men's Pair (28.150); Zhanna Parkhometc, Yulia Nikitina and Ksenia Sukhomlinova in Women's Group (28.300) and Nikita Zhestovskiy, Anatolii Volf, Igor Tarabat and Erlan Ibraev in Men's Group (28.150).
Britain, its gymnastics program perhaps bolstered by a successful London Olympic Games, is a new world power on the scene, scooping up seven golds, four silvers and two bronze. Most of Britain's titles came in the younger age groups -- including, among 13-19-year-olds, Britain's Isabella Montagna and Lewis Walker, who tied for gold in Mixed Pair (28.2) with Portugal's Beatriz Gueifao and Rodrigo Matos (28.200). Britain also captured three golds apiece amongst 12-18-year-olds and 11-16-year-olds. The team is expected to make a splash in senior World competition as well.
A total of 45 medals were handed out during the World Age Group competition, though an unprecedented tie for silver in Women's Pair between Belgium, Portugal, Russia, the U.S. and Ukraine in the 12-18 age group and a two-way tie between Belgium and Britain for bronze in Women's Trio amongst 13-19-year-olds brought the actual number given to 49.
In addition, Portugal, Belarus, Ukraine, Israel, Belgium, Kazakhstan and the U.S. all also won at least one medal in Age Group competition.
