Aerobic GymnasticsLAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, March 2, 2010: For the FIG Aerobic Gymnastics Technical Committee’s first meeting of the year, President Mireille Ganzin (FRA) invited her staff to gather at the FIG head office in Lausanne (SUI) from February 20 to 26.
A look at last season was high on the order of the day; members will be tapping into the experience gleaned in 2009 to update current regulations. The 2010 calendar was also a topic for discussion. This year, 6 FIG World Series stages will carry Aerobics through Tokyo (JPN), Borovets (BUL), Ponta Delgada (POR), Conversano (ITA), Las Vegas (USA) and on to Timisoara (ROU).
But 2010 will also showcase the discipline’s 11th World Championships, set to take place in Rodez (FRA) in June parallel to the International Age Group competitions. With definitive registration closed for the worlds, 433 gymnasts have registered in total: 46 male individuals, 60 women, 36 mixed pairs, 39 trios and 23 6-gymnast groups. 5 continents will be represented, proof of to what extent the discipline is flourishing. Universality has been on a steady rise since Aerobic was first introduced to the FIG competitions programme, and since the first world championships were held in France at Paris’ Stade de Coubertin in 1995.
…and in 2011!Technical Committee members are turning their attention to 2011 and the
Universiades. This is the first time in its history that Aerobic Gymnastics will be part of the Summer Universiades, a major event on the calendar. The 26th edition is slated for Shenzen in the People’s Republic of China.
Good news for a discipline that continues to move up and toward its fullest potential.
