Women sparkle at 25th Gym Festival in Slovakia

WAG 25th Gym Festival
Trnava (SVK), June 1-3, 2012

LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, June 15, 2012: The GYM FESTIVAL in Trnava, Slovakia has been a fixture on the women’s international gymnastics calendar for quarter of a century now.

A total of 21 senior and junior gymnasts from nine countries participated in the 2012 edition, which took place during the first week of June.

This year’s event was unique in several respects. Notably, it was graced by the presence of several legendary figures and former Olympic champions including Vera Caslavska, the most decorated Czech athlete in history, and FIG Honorary President  Yuri Titov. And the event was given a further boost by the presence of the President of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Gasparovic.

Vera Caslavska participated at the opening press conference, which generated a large amount of media interest. She and Yuri Titov also visited Trnava´s gymnastics hall, where they met with the local clubs, coaches, gymnasts and their parents. Later, they attended a book signing of a new biography of Caslavska, Život na Olympu (Life on Olympus), alongside current international gymnastics stars Okasana Chusovitina (GER), Anna Pavlova (RUS) and Slovak Olympic gymnast Maria Homolova.

Anna Pavlova won gold in the all-round competition, while silver went to Oana Haidu Raluca of Romania and bronze to Luiza Galiulina from Uzbekistan.

The Novak Family Memorial Prize - awarded to the competition‘s best senior gymnast - went to Oksana Chusovitina, while Slovakian gymnast Barbora Mokosova won the Vojtech Schön Memorial Prize for the best performance in the junior category.
