New National Gymnastics Federation
LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, June 19, 2013: In the context of gymnastic development across the African continent, Uganda has requested an application to join the activities of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). In support, the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Uganda, represented by its President William Frederick Blick and Secretary General Dr Donald Rukare, were received at the FIG Head Office in Lausanne on June 13, 2013.
FIG President Prof. Bruno Grandi and his Secretary General André F. Gueisbuhler discussed both the statutory conditions of a request for admission and the steps that will need to be taken prior to a final vote by the FIG General Assembly.
During the discussion, the FIG President affirmed his support of an intensive gymnastics development programme in Uganda that would set the groundwork for a sustainable infrastructure, and expressed FIG commitment to the technical staff during its initial phase. FIG says it is onboard to activate the Academies programme, which has more than proven its effectiveness in developing countries.
It’s now up to the Federation of Uganda to return the completed application to the FIG, after which it will be submitted to the FIG Council for ratification in May 2014. The admission of Uganda to the FIG umbrella federation will bring the total number of federation members to 136 - 21 of which African.
