Oksana Chusovitina changes nationality
LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, February 20, 2013: During its first meeting of the new Olympic Cycle on February 14-16, 2013, the newly composed FIG Executive Committee approved a request for change in nationality from Women’s Artistic gymnast Oksana Chusovitina (37), afore agreed on by the German Gymnastics Federation (DTB).
The Uzbekistan native, who has had a German passport since 2006 and who competed for the first time under the colours of Germany at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Aarhus (DEN), will again start for her country of origin. Chusovitina is aiming for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (BRA), which would mark her seventh consecutive Olympic participation.
“Oksana has done a lot for Women’s Artistic Gymnastics in Germany since her naturalisation. Primarily due to her sporting success as an individual gymnast and member of the German national team, we have decided to support her request to start for Uzbekistan,” said DTB President Rainer Brechtken.
At the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart (GER), Chusovitina helped the German team to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where she won Silver on Vault as the oldest competitor of the field. At London 2012, where she finished 5th in the Vault final, Chusovitina, together with Iordan Iovtchev (BUL), set the all-time Artistic Gymnastics record of a sixth Olympic participation.
