FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup
Doha (QAT), March 27 – 29, 2013
LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, March 26, 2013: London 2012 Olympic Champions Arthur Zanetti of Brazil and Krisztian Berki of Hungary headline the field of the FIG World Challenge Cup in Doha (QAT) that gets underway at Aspire Academy on Wednesday.
Some 140 gymnasts representing a total of 33 different countries are registered to compete at the event that takes place for the sixth consecutive year since its launch in 2008. After kick off last weekend in Cottbus (GER), Doha is the second stopover of the 2013 FIG World Challenge Cup series and features Qualifications on Wednesday and Apparatus Finals on Thursday and Friday.

Doha hosts of the Qatar Gymnastics Federation are known for top notch organisation and hospitality, which have attracted an increasing number of delegations and gymnasts to the competition at the Aspire Academy Dome. “Gymnasts like to come here because we provide them with world class facilities. They appreciate the high quality of event and hospitality that they experience here,” said Qatar Gymnastics Federation President Ali al Hitmi.
Six Qatari gymnasts, four male and two female, will join an interesting international line-up that includes top Dutch gymnast Yuri van Gelder, a former world champion on Still Rings who is set to return to Doha after a five year break. Multiple World medallist on Pommel Horse, Prashanth Sallathurai lines up for Australia, while China registers former Parallel Bars World Champion Wang Guanyin and Liao Qiuhua, who will defend his title on Still Rings at Aspire Dome.
Romania’s delegation includes London Olympian and Vault specialist Flavius Koczi as well as Youth Olympic Champion on Still Rings Andrei Vasile Muntean. On the women’s side, we will see Larisa Iordache and Diana Bulimar, who helped Romania to their Olympic Bronze medal in London, Beijing Olympic Vault Champion Hong Un Jong (PRK), 2011 World Bronze medallist on Vault Thi Ha Thanh Phan of Vietnam and Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber, who won the titles on Vault and Uneven Bars at the FIG World Cup in La Roche sur Yon (FRA).

About 2013 FIG Individual Apparatus Artistic Gymnastics World Cup and World Challenge Cup Series
The 2013 World Cup and World Challenge Cup season for individual-apparatus tournaments features a total of six events. The series starts with the only Individual Apparatus Finals World Cup of the year in La Roche sur Yon (FRA) on March 16-17, and continues with five World Challenge Cups scheduled as follows: Cottbus (GER) on March 21-24, Doha (QAT) on March 27-29, Ljubljana (SLO) on April 26-28, Anadia (POR) on June 21-23, and Osijek (CRO) on September 12-16.
With separate World Ranking lists being established for this series (six for men and four for women), and the Individual Apparatus rankings including combined lists for the World Cup and World Challenge Cups, the overall winners will be crowned in Osijek.
World Cups with Individual Apparatus qualification rounds and finals are open to the apparatus finalists of the 2012 Olympic Games and the best four gymnasts per apparatus from the 2012 World Cup Ranking list for Individual Apparatus. In addition, the organising member federation can grant wild cards to a maximum of one man and one woman.
The World Challenge Cup series is an open category, with participation limited to two gymnasts per country and apparatus, and invitations addressed at least to the apparatus finalists of the 2012 Olympic Games and the best eight gymnasts per apparatus from the 2012 World Cup Ranking list for Individual Apparatus.
The winners of the 2013 Individual Apparatus World Cup & World Challenge Cup Series will be the gymnasts with the highest number of points for each apparatus and the best four results counting after the last event in Osijek.
