27th Summer Universiade
Kazan (RUS), July 6 – 17, 2013
LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, June 26, 2013: The 27th edition of the Universiade will be held in Kazan (RUS), July 6 – 17. The event marks the first Universiade, and even more, the first high-profile multi-sport event in the history of modern Russia. First seen in Turin (ITA) in 1959, the multi-sport event is one of the most popular on the international sport calendar. With a 27 sport line-up, Gymnastics showcases Men’s and Women’s Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics at these Games.
All three Gymnastics disciplines first appeared in the programme of the Summer Universiade in 1961 in Sofia (BUL). While at that time only Individual All-around events were presented in Artistic Gymnastics, the programme now comprises Team, All-around and Apparatus competitions. Rhythmic Gymnastics competitions in Kazan include All-around competitions and Apparatus Finals for Individuals and Groups.
The word Universiade is a hybrid of the words University and Olympiad. Held alternately in winter and summer and promoted by Kazan 2013 with the motto “U are the World”, these Games are widely recognised and bring together the best university athletes from all over the world.
For the FIG, Artistic events are scheduled from July 7 – 10 and Rhythmic from July 14 – 16, all of which will be held in the Gymnastics Centre, one of the largest sport complexes in Russia. Technical Delegates on site are TC Presidents Steve Butcher (USA) for Men’s and Nellie Kim (BLR) for Women’s Artistic, as well as TC Vice President Noha Abou Shabana (EGY) for Rhythmic Gymnastics.
Over 13,500 University athletes from 170 countries are expected to participate at the Universiade in Kazan, making it the biggest ever in the history of the event. There will be 351 sets of medals distributed in the two weeks of the competition.
